Description The full story Melancholy – Male Vampire Jester The sombre and reserved counterpart to the vivacious Sanguine. Melancholy’s last century of life has seen him locked within the bitter confines of immortality. His heart, though buried deep and long dormant, is burdened with the pain of both himself, and his lover. Pain and despair are worn plainly on his face, his melancholic demeanour an outward expression of the misery that immortality has brought him. Yet, it is not himself that he weeps for most, but Sanguine, his beloved. In their early days, the two lived with a travelling troupe that roamed across the pristine landscapes of Greypeak and Brightstone, performing in hallowed halls of lords and ladies or the muck-laden ground of a village square. Joy was shared all the same, though the lords often paid more generously. It was in this troupe that he and Sanguine first met, having been paired together by their employer, yet entwined by love and fate. Her wit, charm and bountiful laughter enchanted him, and their audience. She was his darling, and theirs, though his more reserved nature worked perfectly as her foil in their acts. Though he knew no good thing would last forever, fate had other plans. Their performances had earned them an audience of the Duke’s Court in Strassen. Raucous laughter erupted from the nobles, and their performance earned them a permanent invitation into the court, to join as the house jesters. Whilst Sanguine was delighted, Melancholy felt unease from the sudden eagerness of Duke Henrik, politely declining, citing loyalty to their troupe. Unwilling to take no for an answer, Henrik Strauss revealed his true vampiric nature. Before their eyes, Henrik and his court slaughtered the rest of the troupe, and inflicted the two jesters with his dark curse thereafter. Thereafter, for nearly a century, the two remained prisoners in the confines and comfort of Henkrik’s luxurious castle, their acts performed solely for the amusement of the Duke, his court and any esteemed guests. It broke not only Melancholy’s joy and love for his craft, but Sanguine’s as well, despite the brave face and continued bubbliness that she held up, thought it was now a front and he could feel the boundless sorrow welling in her heart. When the chance to escape finally arose amidst turmoil, Melancholy seized it, dragging Sanguine with him through the chaos to escape the bounds of Strassen. For days they wandered the wilderness, ravenous and starving. They had never been so long without food, for the Duke kept them well fed on his supply of blood-infused wine. Now they were forced to hunt for their food, but neither could bring themselves to do so until the primal hunger drove them to commit an unholy act, slaughtering a young couple by the roadside in the dead of night. The aftermath shattered Sanguine’s spirit, and in her eyes, Melancholy saw a grief deeper than anything that had gripped her before. Determined to ease her pain, he cast aside his former name, and took up his new moniker as “Melancholy,” from then on, vowing to her that he would bear all the sorrows she carried, so she might be at peace. Soon after, the two were uncovered by Benoit, a vampiric general of Baroness Noctra de Blance, who offered them refuge at Castle Beaufax. While Melancholy was suspicious of being lured into another gilded cage, he accepted, knowing that it would break Sanguine further if they were forced to continue feeding like they had days before. Since their escape, they have performed regularly at Castle Beaufax’s lavish masquerades, captivating vampires and mortals alike. The grief of Melancholy is etched plainly on his face and mask, with their performances now reflecting his more sombre nature. Tears of laughter and joy are common responses in the crowd now, though despair is all that Melancholy feels, for the grief of his beloved is a heavy burden.
