Description The full story Alia of Ardris – Adept of Evocation (Bust) Born and raised on campus in the University of Ardris, Alia’s parents were both well respected professors in their respective fields of the arcane arts. A life embroiled in magic was all she ever knew, and naturally her stars were always written to follow in the path of her parents. Being gifted at magic herself was a given, though Alia also became quite popular among her peers as a charismatic girl and a natural leader, with a kind and soft demeanour often winning the hearts of even the most calloused wizards and warlocks. Whilst her parents expected Alia to graduate with flying colours and settle into the ranks of the faculty soon after, she had other plans. The week after her graduation, Alia instead chose to sail across the Grey Sea to the kingdom of Baldur. She was well aware of the arcanophobic nature of its inhabitants, yet had often heard tales of court wizards who lived second only to the king himself in both their riches and prestige. Often it was said that it was these individuals who truly ran the kingdom, pulling the strings of its nobles and instilling the hatred of magic in its populace to prevent any potential uprisings or challenges against them: for them to be the only one to wield the power of Minera’s Breath in the land meant total and utter dominion of its people. Alia wanted to be among these ranks, though she knew she might have to work or fight for it, starting as a lowly licensed mage conjuring cheap tricks before she could find herself in a noble’s palace. Two weeks after her arrival in the city of Grimhelm, a failed assassination attempt took place against the kingdom’s military leader, Field Marshal Kurt Williams, conducted by a group of rebels comprised or rogue artificers and dark sorcerers. The resulting fallout saw the Field Marshal swiftly enact Martial Law across the kingdom’s cities, as he called the Inquisitors into action to detain and question any and all magic users across the kingdom, licensed or not. With extreme prejudice, they were also given leave to execute any they might suspect of being associated with the terrorist cell responsible for the assassination attempt. Given the current state of things, just about everyone became a suspect, including an unfortunate young and innocent mage who had just arrived from Belfrie. Alia barely escaped with her life after being dragged by her hair from the inn where she had stayed. Her belongings were confiscated and burned, and her magic was suppressed by Liturium shackles, halting her from casting or being affected by any magic. As it became her turn to face the Inquisitor with the executioner’s sword, she was saved by a brief glimpse of a man, cloaked and masked. A dagger flew into the chest of the executioner, and he hurriedly broke the binding shackles on Alia’s wrists, whisking her to safety as a small group of rebels descended on the Inquisitor squad. There she was brought to Madame Octavia, though her mind was in tatters for the narrow breadth she had tread from death’s door. The Madame took in the anguished child, assuring her safety among the rebels. Though Alia wanted nothing more than to flee and return to Belfrie, she knew that was no longer a possibility. The Inquisitors knew her now, and would hunt her to the very borders of the land, and perhaps even beyond should they be so brazen. Alia’s only way out now was to aid the rebels in enacting the change that would see her life spared, or at least decimate the Inquisitors until they no longer had the men to pursue her.
